I spent the afternoon yesterday with my Mum and somehow we got to reminiscing about the old days (God, now I feel really old saying "Old Days"). The Teenager sat transfixed and kind of horrified as we laughed about how rubbish all electrical things seem today but were seen as totally cool back then.........I love thinking and remembering the past, it makes my brain feel like its actually working. Here are my top 5 gadgets Now and Then.......
1. DVD Player VS Betamax Video Player..................................This machine was as big as a coffee table and made the most horrendous noise as you ejected the massive video tape out of it. We thought we had made it when Dad carried it into the house (using a crane as it was so large) that was until next door got a VHS........We were crushed.
2. Xbox VS Atari Games Console..........................I was probably the most popular girl with all the boys due to this little gem. Ping pong tennis using that state of the art line thing to hit the ball back and forth, and when I got Space Invaders, well that was it........................I was officially cool.
3. IPod VS Walkman............I loved my Walkman...... I thought I looked like one of the cast of Fame as I strutted down the road with this brick type musical gadget strapped to my Boogie belt on my Pepe Jeans.
4. Hot Plates VS Hostess Trolley....................My mum had one of this and she loved it, each Sunday she would cook all the food then decant it into the many compartments within the trolley. I could never see the point personally at all the fluffing about moving the peas to this bit and the carrots to that bit. By the time we got to eat it all it was dry and slightly discoloured. Then you had double the washing up when it was time to clean up..........Who was I to argue...........I had gigantic headphones on and a musical brick on my lap.
5.Cd's/Downloads VS Cassette Tapes..............................I can remember Dad buying me a pack of tapes so that I could record the Sunday afternoon Chart Show from Radio 1. At no stage did he tell me it was illegal to do this and I became a master at pressing pause just as the DJ was about to talk. I can remember my Nan coming into the bedroom and whispering to me in case it recorded her voice on the tape bless her.
So ...............What do you remember??? Or am I just really showing my age and are you all reading this blog wondering what the hell I am talking about. Would love to hear your comments.....
Lots of Retro Love

I've linked up with Jaime over at Magic Moments, come on over and have a read of lots of other fab blogs.
hahah! I remember everything you've listed!!
ReplyDeleteIt's funny....My kids probably don't even know what a cassette, Walkman or video player is...lol
Mine don't either, they really don't know how lucky they are do they xx
DeleteI know, right? We taped from the radio all the time and it was never an issue. My mum's sewing room happened to be next door to mine though and whenever her sewing machine was going, I got a buzzing noise on the radio. I don't know how many times I had to re-tape a song at a later date because she had ruined it. Good times!
ReplyDeleteOh no, bring back the good times xxx
DeleteI still have my Walkman, not getting rid just yet, still have some tapes :) Those hostess trolley's made me wince even back then, when one was wheeled out at a friends house (we never had one) tasteless, watery, rubbery food was on the menu! (sorry to your mum if she loved hers). Loved the chart shows but we missed the Betamax phew!
ReplyDeleteOh my goodness, I wish I still had some of my old bits and bobs, would love to see the kids faces. Xx
DeleteWe had a Betamax too! My dad had this idea that it would be better than VHS, our next one was VHS ;)
ReplyDeleteI was just the other day in the car reminiscing with the husband about when we used to tape songs from the radio, trying not get the presenters voices. Mission impossible :)
Lovely memories.
The VHS was so much better. Thanks for reading xxxx
DeleteOh my god - I LOVE this. Loved the hostess trolley the best. We used to have one and Mum would bring it in the lunge on Sunday night for supper in front of Howards Way & Bread. Oh the memoires you've given me this evening xx
ReplyDeleteOooo Howard's Way....now there's a blast from the past. Xxx
DeleteI was saying this yesterday as we went around the science museum - and cassette players were high tec - it was record players. What I saw which made me feel old is a typewriter! Remember making a mistake and having to pull it out and start again!
ReplyDeleteOh yes....and good old Tipex.....made such a mess too xx
Deletelol I remember all those items x
ReplyDeleteMakes me feel super old xxx
DeleteWe had a Betamax, in fact we had most of those items you mention! I used to record the Sunday afternoon chart show too, remember how frustrating it was when you missed the first nano second of the one you had been waiting to come on for 45 minutes lol! x
ReplyDeleteWe are of an era! What about modern coffee maker vs old teas made!
ReplyDeleteMy mum still has her Hostess Trolley! And as a child I always said I would get one too. I remember being so proud of our first TV with a remote control. Now I curse because we have so many. I had a walkman then a disc man! And remember seeing CD's demonstrated on Tomorrow's World. Oh I'm old.....
ReplyDeleteI think we must have all sat and recorded the charts lol.
